4,000 rural youth getting training for employment in livestock sector

LAHORE: Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Board (PLDDB) is providing training to 4,000 rural youth as Artificial Insemination Assistants (AIAs) and Women Livestock Extension Workers (WLEWs).
The aim is to increase milk production by 4 billion liters and beef production by 0.27 million tonnes with economy boost of Rs 171 billion over a period of 5 to 6 years.

Second batch of 200 AIAs and 200 WLEWs will be awarded certificates on completion of extensive training in their related fields at a ceremony being held on May 28, 2012.

Punjab Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Malik Ahmad Ali Aulakh will chair this function while Steering Committee on Livestock Chairman Muhammad Arshad Jutt will be the guest of honour on this occasion,’ said PLDDB CEO Maj-Gen (r) Muhammad Ali Khan to review the arrangements of the ceremony.

Ali Khan said the Board so far had trained 286 AIAs and same number of WLEWs. Out of these 105 trained AIAs had performed more than 9,950 artificial inseminations along with tagging performed in two months record time. WLEWs trained in first phase had also started functioning and they had sold 20 metric tonnes of Balanced Ration (Vanda) during one month’s field activities.

Two hundred ‘Livestock Resource Centres’ established and managed by AIAs and WLEWs have become a symbol of livestock development being carried out by the Board under the directions of the Punjab government and the Chief Minister Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif, he added.

Those who have been trained by the Board as AIAs would be earning Rs 15,000 per month while WLEWs around Rs 8,000 per month. Helping acts carried out by these young people to livestock farmers would hopefully result in reduction of calving interval from 3-4 years to 2 years while milk yield would also increase by 2 litre per animal per day. staff report
